Photography is a powerful art and a perfect way to get away from your life. Every step from preparing for a shot to your final product can be extremely fun and fulfilling. This can help you take your mind off of other stresses that you might have. A good photograph can speak volumes to its viewers.

Play with the aperture settings. Take a number of photos of the same subject with different settings to see how it affects the look of the final photo. Bigger f-stops allow you to get an entire landscape in focus, while a smaller f-stop will draw attention only to the center of your frame.

Don’t be afraid of taking pictures. If you use the wrong settings, it’s okay. Go ahead and take the picture anyway. If you want to photograph a person or pet, go up and ask if it’s okay; create a release form to sign if it makes you more comfortable. Just go do it!

Once you have spotted the subject of your picture, make sure to take your shot right away. This is especially true if your subject is a living being, such as a child or animal. Since staying in one position for a long time is hard for animals and children, you want to make sure you get the pose you want.

The number one lighting to avoid in photography is the use of your built in camera flash. Using the flash setting in your camera actually creates the dreaded red eyes and makes your subjects appear featureless shadow blobs. Only use this setting in the case of an emergency if you are left with no other choice.

Only select the best shots that you have if you are planning on showing your pictures to someone. This will help them form the highest possible opinion of you and your work, which is desirable if you are trying to land a job. Always present your best work to others.

Pay attention to your background. Your main focus should be on your object, but you should use the background to support it. Avoid any unnecessary distractions and clean your background to report the attention on your object. Play with lines and perspective in your background to compliment the shape of your object.

Natural light will always provide you with the highest quality photos. Cloudy days are actually better for shooting than sunny ones, because the clouds act as a natural diffuser, spreading the light out and eliminating shadows and harsh contrasts. Opt for your next photo shoot outside on an overcast day.

Photography isn’t an arcane art that only a select few can master. You will improve as you experiment. If you have a digital camera, you’ll probably end up deleting some of your pictures: you don’t have to develop them all if you don’t like them. Editing, browsing, and critiquing your photographs after you’ve taken them will eventually lead you to taking better pictures.

Take your camera with you as often as you can. You never know when a great opportunity for a photo will present itself. Keep your camera out and ready if you expect to use it – by the time you get your camera out of the bag, get the lens cap off, and adjust your settings, your shot is gone. Hang the camera around your neck. Of course, if you’re in a high-crime area, or if you don’t want it to be obvious that you are a tourist, you may need to be a bit more discreet.

When you are dealing with low lighting settings and you do not have a tripod, try to be aware of your shutter speed. Make sure it has a denominator that is greater than the focal length of the lens. Otherwise, you will not be able to capture sharp images.

Have you ever had to take pictures of subjects that had been in the rain? You can create this effect yourself with a spray bottle that you can mist over the subject to give the appearance of “rain.”

Photographing isn’t for everyone, but anyone can enjoy pictures. By taking photographs yourself, you can capture memories and interesting details of life that might otherwise have been missed. As a hobby, photography can be rewarding and inspirational. Taking photos is also a good way to de-stress and forget about the troubles of the day.
